What is MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker)

MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker)

An MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) is an electrical safety device used to protect circuits from overloads and short circuits. It automatically trips and disconnects the power supply when there is excessive current flow, preventing damage to wiring and appliances.

Functions of MCB:

1. Overload Protection - If the current exceeds the rated limit, the MCB trips and cuts off the power supply.

2. Short Circuit Protection - In case of a short circuit, the MCB reacts instantly to disconnect the circuit, preventing damage and fire hazards.

3. Manual Switching - It can also be manually switched ON or OFF when needed.

Types of MCB:

1. Single Pole (SP) - Protects one phase wire.

2. Double Pole (DP) - Protects both phase and neutral.

3. Triple Pole (TP) - Protects three-phase circuits.

4. Four Pole (4P) - Protects three-phase circuits along with neutral.

MCBs are more reliable and safer than traditional fuses because they can be reset and reused multiple times instead of being replaced.
